Reaction Time Test

The screen turns green. How long until you react? This free reaction time test measures that gap in milliseconds. Take five rounds, see your average, and find out whether your fastest response was a one-off or something you can repeat.

How Fast Is Your Reaction Speed?

A 250 ms reaction test score means a quarter of a second passed between green and your response being registered. Lower is faster. This reaction speed test gives you one signal and one action: watch the color, then respond.

How the reaction time test works

  1. Get your finger ready.

    Click or tap the display to start the reaction time test. On a phone, the space just below the device also accepts taps. For a keyboard response, focus the display and use Space or Enter. Keep the same input method for all five rounds.

  2. Wait for green.

    The screen stays red for a random one to three seconds. Watch for the change. Clicking early retries the same round without adding a score or using up one of your five attempts.

  3. React, then repeat.

    When the screen turns green, click, tap, or press your chosen key. Your reaction time appears in milliseconds. Start the next round when ready. After five valid responses, the reaction time test shows your average and all five scores.

Test Your Reflexes Online

One visual signal. One response.

This reflex test asks for one thing: respond when you see green. You already know where to click, so keep your hand still and focus on the signal. A human reaction time test like this measures how quickly you begin that response.

People often call a reaction speed test a reflexes test, although responding to a screen is voluntary. A knee-jerk reflex follows a different pathway. OpenStax explains that distinction. This reaction test measures a visual response; it cannot assess the reflexes examined in a medical visit.

Reaction speed matters when you spot a pass or decide whether to brake, but those situations involve decisions that this reflex test leaves out. Use the online reaction time test to track your response to a known signal. The result describes that task.

What Is a Good Reaction Time?

Read your reaction time test result as a set of five. If one round is 190 ms and the other four are near 280 ms, the fastest round does not describe your usual reaction speed. Look for an average you can lower across several sessions on the same setup.

Average Human Reaction Time

Average human reaction time changes with age, but the test matters too. A 2021 MindCrowd study analyzed simple visual responses from 75,666 adults aged 18–85. Each person completed five rounds, responding when a pink sphere appeared. Older adults were slower on average. The researchers used each person’s median response; this reaction time test uses the five-round mean.

What newer reaction time research shows

A 2025 MindCrowd-Expanded study analyzed reaction test results from 1,594 desktop and laptop users. It measured simple responses separately from responses requiring a choice, and found age-related slowing in both. Phone and tablet results were excluded from this analysis because device type affected performance.

Is 200 ms a good reaction time?

A 200 ms average means your responses were recorded about one-fifth of a second after the signal. Whether that is a good result depends on the test and equipment. Repeat five rounds on the same device and compare your averages over time; the laboratory figures above are context, not a direct ranking of your result.

How can I improve my reaction speed?

Start with enough sleep: sleep loss slows reaction time and makes it harder to stay focused. Before a set, silence notifications, relax your hand, and keep your eyes on the color change. If you feel tense or keep clicking early, take a break before trying again.

Build a habit of short practice sessions over days or weeks. Try one warm-up set, then two or three measured sets on the same device. Practice can help you learn the reaction speed test, though gains may level off. Stop when you lose focus, and compare your five-round averages across days to see whether you are improving.

Can I take the reaction time test on a phone?

Yes. To test your reaction time, tap the screen or the space immediately below the device. Keep your thumb near the same spot. Compare phone sessions with phone sessions: switching to a mouse or keyboard changes the setup and the way you respond.

Does reaction time change with the time of day or your mood?

Yes. In the morning, grogginess just after waking can slow your reaction time. Around midday and into the afternoon, watch for a dip in alertness. Some night owls respond faster in the evening than in the morning, but staying up late and losing sleep can slow you down.

Excitement can make you feel alert without guaranteeing a faster reaction test score. If anxiety, frustration, or pressure makes you rush or lose focus, pause before the next set. Watch for green rather than guessing when it will appear.

There is no best hour for everyone. To find your own pattern, take the reaction time test in the morning, afternoon, and evening over several days. Keep the device the same and note how well you slept.

Why didn’t my click count?

You may have clicked before green, or too quickly after it appeared. Click or tap the screen to try that round again, then wait until you see green before clicking. Your previous rounds still count.

Can I save my reaction time test results?

Yes. The browser keeps up to 300 completed sessions. Open My stats to review your reaction test history, or choose Share result to download a score card. No account is needed. Clearing site data removes your history; private browsing may not keep it.
