Picture the moment before a running or swimming start: you’re ready, waiting for the sound. Before your next practice, try that waiting game with one finger. Let the sound begin, then tap. Your score here measures your button response; timing a full race start takes a different setup.

It’s quiz night. You know the answer and your hand is hovering over the buzzer. Who gets there first? Give each friend seven rounds on the same device, using the same controls and calibration setting. Compare the whole-run averages, then swap back for a rematch.
One room. One sound. Who jumps early?
Make it a classroom or party game: one player takes the controls while everyone listens. Wait for the note, then press. An early tap retries that round. Save each player’s result card before passing the device along, and compare who stayed consistent across all seven rounds.

Can you put seven good taps together?
One quick tap feels great. Then another note catches you waiting, and the next one brings you back. That’s the part worth looking at: the shape of your whole run.
In this example, the quickest tap is 230 ms, but the seven-round average is 260 ms. On your next attempt, try bringing the slower rounds closer to your best. A lower average and a tighter spread give you two things to chase.
Morning you vs afternoon you.
Try a run before work, then another in the afternoon or after a break. Keep your device, volume, controls and calibration setting the same. Compare the averages in your history: which run was quicker, and which was steadier? Make it a personal challenge to revisit tomorrow.

The beat feels right. Your taps look late.
Your rhythm game says “Late”, yet your tap felt right. Or you’re tapping a count-in before playing an instrument and want to check your timing. Follow the beat at 70 BPM. Each press leaves a light ring and shows how early or late you landed.
Nudge the setting left or right until it feels aligned. Check it with another pass, then choose Apply calibration. Your next sound test uses the confirmed offset, and your history keeps both the adjusted scores and original timings.
New headset. Different score?
New headphones, a different mouse, or a move from laptop to phone: does your usual score come with you? Save a result card before swapping, change one thing, then take another seven rounds. Compare original times in history if you used calibration.
For a consistent setup, try wired headphones at a comfortable volume. Bluetooth can add delay; with speakers, sit close and keep the distance steady. Once you’ve chosen your setup, try rhythm calibration and take a fresh run with that setting.
Sound or sight: which gets you moving first?
A sound begins. A screen turns green. Which one gets your finger moving faster? Try both and see whether your ears or your eyes lead your next response.
Take the audio reaction test, then try the visual test with the same hand and controls. Compare the full-session averages; if you applied calibration, use the original audio average in your history. Which one comes out ahead for you?

In a small study of 14 participants, average auditory reaction time was about 284 ms, compared with 331 ms for the visual task. That makes an interesting comparison, but it isn’t a score you need to beat.
An auditory reaction time test uses a sound as its cue. Results depend on the task and equipment, so your own repeatable setup is the useful starting point. The browser’s sound and display timing can also affect your comparison here.

What is a good audio reaction time?
Start with a score you can repeat. Take a few seven-round runs on the same setup and calibration setting, then aim for a lower average and a smaller spread. Equipment and the type of cue affect the number, so a single online benchmark cannot tell the whole story.
Is auditory reaction time faster than visual?
Often, in simple detection tasks. Try one audio session and one visual session with the same hand and controls to see your own difference. If you calibrated the sound test, use its original average in history for this comparison. The research section above gives an example, rather than a target score.
How can I improve my reaction time for FPS games?
Use a short run before you queue to check your response to a sound. In the game, practise identifying footsteps and reloads, keeping your crosshair ready, and choosing what to do next. Those decisions and aiming matter alongside speed. A faster score here alone does not guarantee better performance in VALORANT, CS2 or another shooter.
Can I use this as a reaction time test for sports?
Try the waiting-for-a-start-signal idea with a sound cue and a click. It measures one prepared button response. A running or swimming start also involves moving your body, so this score is not a track or pool start time. Use it as a short personal challenge alongside your usual practice.
Does this test use gunshots or footsteps?
The test uses recorded piano notes, rather than gunshots or footsteps. Preview the sounds on the keyboard first, then respond as soon as each cue begins. You do not need to identify the note.
Why is my score slower with Bluetooth headphones?
Bluetooth can add delay before you hear the note. Try wired headphones for a more consistent setup, and compare runs using the same headphones and controls. If you use speakers, sit close and keep your distance steady.
How does calibration change my reaction test results?
Tap along at 70 BPM, check your alignment, then select Apply calibration. Your next sound test subtracts that offset from each response: +40 ms turns an original 240 ms into 200 ms. Results and share cards show adjusted times; history also keeps the originals. The setting includes your tapping habits as well as device timing. Calibrate again after a page refresh or an audio-device change.
Does the test record sound or save my results online?
No microphone or account is needed. Your sessions stay in this browser, with separate sound and visual histories. Download a result card to share with a friend. Scores do not sync between devices, and clearing browser storage can remove them.
